Finally! Our fall favorites are here: brightly colored leaves, football, pumpkin spice everything. Here’s something else to add to your list of fall favorites: humor. Okay, so really this should be on your list of favorites no matter the season! But sometimes in the hustle and bustle of activity – even when we love those activities – our sense of humor can get lost in the rush.
Research tells us that laughter and humor are important. They help us cope with stress and brighten our outlook on the everyday. But has it ever occurred to you that we have to choose to use our sense of humor? That’s right. It is a conscious decision. If you can turn to humor – and if you can teach your kids to turn to humor – you’ll find it much easier to face and recover from those difficult situations that happen every single day. Whether it’s a bad day at school or work, disappointment in a friend, lots of homework, humor really can help. True, some situations aren’t humorous, no matter how you look at them. But that’s when you can choose to find something, somewhere, to smile about.
As a family, make an effort to laugh every day. Take turns finding a good joke. Challenge your children to find something humorous about the day to share at the dinner table with the family. (This might also be a good time to talk about the difference between laughing at an event or situation and laughing at someone else.) However you choose to do it, make humor a part of your family’s daily life during every season of the year!
